North Shore
The North Shore is located north of the Staten Island Expressway (Interstate 278) in Richmond County. It provides access to three of Staten Island’s four bridges: the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to the east, connecting Staten Island to Brooklyn and the greater New York City area; and the Goethals and Bayonne Bridges to the west and north, linking respectively to Elizabeth and Bayonne in New Jersey. The St. George Terminal functions as a transportation hub for the New York City Ferry Service, the starting point for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Staten Island Railway (SIR), and hosts 22 MTA bus lines that connect the North Shore with the rest of the borough.
History
The North Shore boasts a rich history, with evidence of Leni Lenape communities dating back to 2100 BC. European settlement began in the 17th century, and the area was a significant manufacturing district during the 20th century.
