History

The Mid-Island region of Staten Island, like much of the island, was primarily agricultural until the 1960s. The earliest permanent European settlement was Oude Dorp (Old Village), established by the Dutch in 1661 near present-day South Beach. After the English takeover, Oude Dorp was resurveyed and expanded in 1671, becoming Nieuwe Dorp (New Village), now known as New Dorp. The area remained largely farmland until the 1960s, when residential development increased significantly. The opening of Staten Island Mall in 1973 in New Springville marked a pivotal moment, driving substantial growth and development in the region.
